After demonstrating a great job in the world of action as the director of each one of the installments of John Wick, which will soon release the fourth part, Chad Stahelski is preparing to take on one of the biggest challenges of his career by adapting one of the most popular PlayStation games: Ghost of Tsushima.

Announced in 2021, the film has made steady progress in its development. In addition, he confirmed the shooting would take place in Japan with protagonists of the same nationality.

TotalFilm (via Slashfilm) was recently able to speak with the director while promoting John Wick 4, and he gave some details on the current state of Ghost of Tsushima:

And while it sounds like bad news, Stahelski also gave some hope for fans waiting for the film:

“Ghost of Tsushima would be my favorite to do next. Without going into crazy detail, it’s something I’m super-interested in. We have a really great script. We have a really good creative team behind it. It’s just about getting all the business end of things locked in. It’s kind of in that little bit of flux where everybody is trying to tighten up the deal to get everything going, and to make sure we do the best with it. It’s a simple thing: getting a great script, and starting to put together a cast. It just takes a lot of moving parts”.

“Obviously, Ghost is a special project. Everybody realizes it. Everybody wants to do it, with the introduction of new technologies and a new way to do the epic samurai vibe […] There’s just a lot of things to put together before we really pull the trigger on making it, mostly from my side creatively. And we’re in that process right now, trying to pull everything together so we knock it out of the park”.

The Story of Ghost of Tsushima

Ghost of Tsushima is a story-driven, action-adventure open-world game with combat and stealth elements loosely based on historical events.

Set in 1274 AD on the island of Tsushima, Samurai warriors are the legendary defenders of Japan until the fearsome Mongol Empire invades, wreaking havoc and conquering Tsushima, defeating nearly all samurai stationed on Tsushima Island. As one of the last surviving samurai, Jin Sakai rises from the ashes to fight back with help from his allies, but the honorable tactics and code of the samurai won’t lead to a possible victory over the Mongols. Jin must move beyond samurai traditions to forge a new way of fighting – the way of the Ghost – as he wages an unconventional war for the freedom of Japan.
