Since the announcement that Daredevil: Born Again would be joining the Marvel slate of upcoming Disney+ shows, fans have been questioning how the new series will link to the former Netflix show. Now it seems that star Charlie Cox has confirmed that the new Daredevil series will be “a whole new thing.”

Charlie Cox made his debut as Matt Murdock in 2015 as part of Marvel Television’s Defenders Saga on Netflix, and after the series was canceled as Marvel Studios regained control over their lost children, it was unclear whether the character would be seen again. However, with the multiverse now offering a get-out clause for continuity, Cox is back playing a slightly different version of the same character and has his own 18-part series heading to Disney+ in early 2024.

Speaking recently with Extra, Cox elaborated a little on what it means to be back in character and how the show will give Daredevil a new start that seemingly won’t just be season 4 of the original Netflix series. He said:

“It is a Season 1, it is not Season 4, so it is a whole new thing. Which I think is the way to go. If you are going to do it again, do it differently.”

Daredevil’s Tone in the MCU is Still Unconfirmed

As part of Netflix’s Defenders Saga, which has recently been transferred to Disney+ in its entirety, Daredevil was a brutal show that earned its Mature rating and delivered something that was much darker in tone than anything Marvel Studios has released as part of the main MCU. However, while there are some concerns over Daredevil being turned into a PG-13 affair will have to wait a little longer to see if their fears come true or not.

Charlie Cox has already returned as Matt Murdock in a short scene in Spider-Man: No Way Home, but his first appearance as Daredevil is coming in the current Disney+ series, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. For those worrying about Daredevil: Born Again’s tone, his upcoming appearance has not helped matters, considering the comedy angle being used by She-Hulk.

However, it has been addressed previously about the style and tone of She-Hulk, especially when it comes to characters like Tim Roth’s Abomination, who made his first full return to the MCU since appearing in 2008’s The Incredible Hulk. Unlike his mean and serious take on the character from way back in the MCU’s early days, Roth has brought a humorous side to Emil Blonsky that some have been quick to dismiss as ruining the character. No doubt there will be similar complaints made against Cox’s first Daredevil appearance, but perhaps it is best to wait and pass judgment on Daredevil: Born Again when the series makes its debut.

While Marvel Studios has been doing a lot of reveals recently, thanks to both San Diego Comic-Con and Disney’s D23 Expo, there is likely to be a bit of a lull in big reveals for a while now. Fans will have plenty of time to speculate on Daredevil and other upcoming shows and movies but will have to keep in mind that what they expect isn’t really ever what they get from Marvel.
