MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, which stars Michelle Yeoh and several other high-profile Chinese stars, centers around two warriors in 19th-century Qing dynasty China searching for a missing sword. It is considered one of Ang Lee’s greatest films ever made, if not at the very top of the list, adored for its still-stunning cinematography and an endearing story full of action, adventure, and romance. It notably received a five-minute standing ovation at the 2000 Cannes Film Festival. Critic Roger Ebert lavished praise for the film upon its release 23 years ago, calling it the “most exhilarating martial arts movie” he had ever seen. Thanks especially to the popularity of Disney’s animated film Mulan (1998) around the same time, excitement for a film about female Chinese warriors was bolstered in the West. The film won over 40 awards, including several Oscars. It dominated the domestic box office, an immense feat at the time for a foreign language film, and it remains the highest-grossing foreign language film domestically, even well above the Korean superstar film Parasite (2019).
Michelle Yeoh Keeps Flexing Her Acting and Fighting Chops
Renowned Malaysian actress Michelle Yeoh started out in Hong Kong action films in the 1980s and early 90s, where she notably did all of her own stunts. She first came onto the Western film scene in the beloved Bond film Tomorrow Never Dies (1997), starring alongside the debonair Pierce Brosnan in an action-packed movie that gained her more international attention. Not long after, she would star in Ang Lee’s martial arts epic Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000), giving her a massive stage to truly flex both her fighting skills and her riveting, versatile acting. Her talents would land her a BAFTA nomination for her role.
Through the years, she starred in several big films, including Memoirs of a Geisha (2005), the incredibly popular comedy Crazy Rich Asians (2018), and her formal introduction to the Marvel Universe in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021). Decades now into her career, her latest action-comedy film, Everything Everywhere All At Once (2022), proved over and above that she remains a vibrantly charming and exceptionally talented force on screen.
