Forget Infinity War and Black Panther; the latest trailer for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse released at San Diego Comic Con looks like it could be the best superhero movie of the year. The fact that it is based on the Spider-Verse arc from Marvel Comics is exciting enough, but the animation style of the latest trailer looks absolutely revolutionary, unlike any other animated feature we have ever seen before.

The stylistic animation of Spider-Man: Into The Spider Verse is supposed to make it feel like “you walked inside a comic book,” according to producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. Their stylistic choice was apparently meant to “tell the story using camera moves and pushing the style in ways a live-action movie can’t.” Based on the looks of the trailers, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller got what they wanted, making Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse look like one of the most artistic 3D animated movie of the decade.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

Rather than starring Peter Parker, who has been the focus of every previous Spider-Man movie, Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse will instead put the spotlight on Miles Morales, the younger version of the web-slinging hero with a much darker suit. Peter Parker will still be present in the movie, however, serving as a mentor to Miles and being voiced by New Girl’s Jake Johnson. Additionally, based on the premise of the Spider-Verse comics, there are sure to be a number of other Peter Parker’s from alternate realities, in addition to other Spider-Men with different alter egos. Among the alternate Spider-Men are Spider-Gwen, voiced by Bumblebee’s Hailee Steinfeld, and Spider-Man Noir, voiced by Academy Award winner Nicolas Cage.

The movie will see Miles Morales and Peter Parker interact with Spider-Men from alternate realities, while also going head to head with villains like the Green Goblin, Kingpin, and the Prowler. The story of this animated movie, in addition to the stylistic animation, shows that Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse will be unlike any Spider-Man movie we have ever seen. We also don’t have to worry about it being too “lame” of a Spider-Man movie for being animated, as it is actually Sony’s first animated movie predicted to receive a PG-13 rating. Check out the brief synopsis for Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse below.

Based on what we’ve seen so far, Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse will put more focus on Miles Morales and Peter Parker than on the rest of the ensemble from the Spider-Verse. While the alternate Spider-Men are sure to play important roles in the movie, the focus will remain on Miles Morales’s big screen debut as he starts to become Spider-Man.

“Spider-Man mentors a teenager from Brooklyn, N.Y., to become the next web-slinging superhero.”

Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse is directed by Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, and Rodney Rothman, and stars Shameik Moore, Hailee Steinfeld, Mahershala Ali, Jake Johnson, Liev Schreiber, and Nicolas Cage.
