The Game of Thrones universe has returned to our screens in the form of House of the Dragon, a prequel series that takes place almost 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones. While bringing us back to familiar geographic and thematic territory, House of the Dragon significantly introduces new characters and depicts the beginning of the end of House Targaryen’s family tree.
House of the Dragonfeatures an ensemble cast that includes Matt Smith, Milly Alcock, Paddy Considine, Emma D’Arcy, Olivia Cooke, and Steve Toussaint, among many others. Of course, with any Game of Thrones addition, there comes a lot of wigs. The wigs in question have already caused quite a stir online, as outlined by W Magazine, so here’s a look at the best wigs in the new series, ranked.

7 Aemma Targaryen

Aemma Targaryen is played by Sian Brooke, and she is the mother of Rhaenyra and wife of King Viserys. She has an intense and gruesome scene in the opening episode of House of the Dragon, and ultimately meets a brutal ending that effectively kick-starts the beginning of the end for the Targaryen dynasty. Her wig is not the best, and seems to have multiple hairlines, which makes it look unrealistic.

6 Laena Velaryon

Lady Laena Velaryon was the eldest child and only daughter of Lord Corlys Velaryon and Princess Rhaenys Targaryen. She is portrayed by Nova Foueillis-Mosé, Savannah Steyn, and Nanna Blondell (all at different ages), who do great in showcasing her steadfast determination, however, her wig is one of the ones that seems to have been given less attention, and doesn’t look as great as others. It’s especially concerning when, per Collider, House Velaryon has a rich history of famous lords and ladies.
5 King Viserys
King Viserys is portrayed by Paddy Considine, and he is the fifth king of The Seven Kingdoms, widely regarded as a ‘decent’ man. While his wig is not so appealing, looking stringy and unloved, it scores points for being true to his character. Especially as Viserys ages significantly throughout House of the Dragon season 1, we see how his hair reflects his gradually declining health. Still, it’s one of the more difficult ones to look at.
4 Lord Corlys Velaryon
Lord Corlys Velaryon is played by Toussaint. Also known as the “Sea Snake,” he is the head of House Velaryon and the most famous seafarer in Westerosi history. He sports a platinum loc wig, which is styled in the half-up-half-down style of the Targaryens, and he makes it look great. Unlike Viserys, who is his contemporary, Corlys doesn’t seem to feel the effects of age, looking better than ever after the length of time covered by House of the Dragon (so far).
3 Daemon Targaryen

Daemon Targaryen is played by Matt Smith, and he is often referred to as the “Rogue Prince,” with a less predictable nature to other members of his family. His wig is stiff, and the hairline does not look natural. It’s unclear if this was a deliberate stylistic choice, however, the wig can be quite distracting. Nonetheless, like many characters in House of the Dragon, Daemon’s different hairstyles add subtle layers to his already-complex character.
2 Rhaenys Targaryen
Rhaenys Targaryen is played by Eva Best, and her character is the wife of Lord Corlys. Known as the Queen Who Never Was, Rhaenys was denied the crown on account of her being a woman. Her wig is one of the more intricate on House of the Dragon, and features a huge top, which may seem bizarre, but underscores the fact that she deserved to be Queen of Westeros over Viserys. It’s ultimately one of the most striking wigs on the show.
1 Rhaenyra Targaryen
Rhaenyra Targaryen (played by both Alcock and D’Arcy) is the daughter and firstborn child of Aemma Arryn and King Viserys. She rides the young dragon Syrax and has a central role in House of the Dragon. Her wig is definitely one of the best on the show, and suits her character well. The wig is reminiscent of the one that Emilia Clarke sported in the original Game of Thrones, and looks the more convincing and better-groomed compared to others in the series.
