The original Dirty Dancing movie was released in 1987 and starred Jennifer Gray as Baby Houseman. The story is set in the summer of 1963 and follows Baby as she falls in love with Johnny Castle (played by Patrick Swayze), a dancer at the Kellerman’s resort. The movie was a huge box office success, grossing over $214 million worldwide, and its soundtrack went on to become one of the best-selling albums of all time.

Jennifer Gray recently spilled some details about the upcoming Dirty Dancing sequel. Speaking to Extra, Gray revealed that the new movie will feature “other characters” from the original film. She didn’t elaborate on who those characters might be, but it’s sure to get fans excited. She also revealed that the sequel will be shot in the same location as the first film, which was shot at the fictional Kellerman’s resort. Gray will reprise her role as Baby in the sequel.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

This is great news for fans of the movie because it means that the sequel will have the same feel as the original. And who doesn’t love a little nostalgia? It’s also worth noting that the original movie was filmed on a shoestring budget, so it’ll be interesting to see how the sequel compares. Will it be a big-budget Hollywood production? Only time will tell.

“I would say that you can count on it being at Kellerman’s, returning to Kellerman’s, and Baby, quite a few years older. You will see other characters that are from the original. It’s tricky and also exciting.”

Jennifer Grey has assured fans that the sequel to Dirty Dancing will not attempt to replace Patrick Swayze, who passed away in 2009. Many were concerned about how the sequel would handle Swayze’s role, who became famous due to his contagious chemistry with co-star Jennifer Grey.

Lionsgate confirmed in August 2020 that a sequel was in the works, with Grey set to star and produce. The studio hired director Jonathan Levine to head the project in May 2022. All in all, it sounds like the Dirty Dancing sequel is going to be everything that fans of the original movie could hope for. With Jennifer Gray set to return as Frances “Baby” Houseman, fans will get to see what happens next for their favorite character. Furthermore, other familiar faces are also set to appear in the movie, making it truly feel like a continuation of the original story.

“All I can say is there is no replacing anyone who’s passed - you never try to repeat anything that’s magic like that. You just go for something different.”

Dirty Dancing 2 will hit theaters in February 2024.
