The Warner Bros. manga adaptation Akira has suffered yet another loss, with director Albert Hughes stepping away from the project. The news comes just weeks after Keanu Reeves passed on the lead role of Kaneda. Warner Bros. and Albert Hughes are said to have parted ways amicably on the project, and the studio is currently seeking another project for Albert Hughes to direct. Warner Bros. still has Akira on the fast track, and are actively searching for a new director....

Alexander Skarsgård and Dane DeHaan are set to headline The Tiger. The film is inspired by the chilling true story of a man-eating tiger in ‘90s Russia. Ukrainian filmmaker Myroslav Slaboshpytskyi, best known for his 2014 film The Tribe, will write and direct The Tiger, based on John Vaillant’s nonfiction book of the same name. Dimension Films announced today that they have acquired U.S. distribution rights to the psychological thriller Angry Little God from director Daniel Stamm (The Last Exorcism). IM Global will finance and produce the film, an English-language remake of the Thai thriller 13: Game of Death alongside Brian Kavanaugh-Jones of Automatik and Kiki Miyake. Jason Blum of Blumhouse (Sinister, The Lords of Salem) will executive produce with Somsak Techaratanaprasert. Daniel Stamm and his writing partner David Birke adapted the script from the original film which follows a bright but meek social services coordinator who’s drowning in debt and desperate as he’s about to marry the love of his life....

Just as students return to the classroom, FOX is scheduling additional classes of the A+ quiz show Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? with four original one-hour episodes airing Fridays, Sept.14, Sept. 21, Sept. 28 and Oct. 5 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT). Following a special two-hour second season premiere on Thursday, Sept. 6 (8:00-10:00 PM ET/PT), all-new episodes will air Thursdays (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX. Acclaimed comedian Jeff Foxworthy is at the head of the class as host of this atypical game show, which measures adults’ lack of knowledge - as revealed by how much they’ve forgotten since grammar school....

Filming has officially kicked off on Batgirl. On Instagram, the movie’s directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah shared an image from the set revealing a slate with the Batgirl logo accompanied by a nameplate that reads, “Officer Barbara Gordon.” The location is tagged as Gotham City, presumably at the city’s police department building, and the caption reads, “Day one of Batgirl!!!” You can see the post below. We caught up with the awesome Baz Luhrmann today, who is currently in Sydney, Australia working on his upcoming F. Scott Fitzgerald adaptation The Great Gatsby, as well as a stage production of his directorial debut Strictly Ballroom. Which has recently been remastered for DVD and is now available in stores everywhere. While talking to him about this new special edition release, we also managed to get him to open up about his plans for The Great Gatsby, as well as an untitled musical that he is currently working on....

We can only imagine what Beavis and Butt-Head would think if they were able to step into the real world and take a look at this. In promotion of Mike Judge’s Beavis and Butt-Head, the Beavis and Butt-Head revival series that’s now streaming, Paramount+ threw a party with the goal of creating the largest-ever serving of nachos. The creators of Better Call Saul have surprisingly made it clear that the final season of the series will have plenty of crossovers with Breaking Bad, including appearances by Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul as Walter White and Jesse Pinkman, respectively. While the announcement did not come as a massive shock to anyone, it was strange that they decided to announce what could have been a secret appearance by the pair, even to Aaron Paul, who expected the producers wanting to keep the information under wraps....

Marvel star Winston Duke, who will soon return as M’Baku in the MCU sequel Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, has compared the arrival of Namor the Sub-Mariner to that of DC’s fellow underwater ruler, Aquaman. In an interview with the LA Times, Duke explains how the portrayal of Namor, a Marvel icon set to make his debut in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, will be “a lot more real than fiction” and far more than just “another Aquaman....

Forever may yet still be a long time coming. At least, that’s what the heads of Marvel have relayed to the cast and crew of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. It was revealed on Friday that Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito, and Nate Moore sent a lengthy joint message, seen below, announcing a hiatus on the film as star Letitia Wright recovers from injuries which are now known to be a bit more severe than previously reported....

Heat Vision reports that Brad Bird (The Incredibles) is in contention to direct Mission: Impossible IV. Tom Cruise, who is returning as secret agent Ethan Hunt, is producing this project with J.J. Abrams. Cruise has been conducting and exhaustive search for the director. Paramount has set May 27, 2011 for the release of this movie and hopes to start shooting this summer.
