The samurai movie genre is a significant part of world cinema history, as important as the cowboy Western was in 20th-Century Hollywood. Born out of the feudal warrior tradition of Japan, the history of the samurai has become much romanticized in modern pop culture. Filmmakers who grew up in the country of its origin, though, had a closer understanding of the intricacies of the samurai lifestyle. In regard to movies and shows based on comics, oftentimes the newest installment of Batman or Spider-Man comes to mind. With the ever-growing MCU and DC’s constant release of films about caped characters we all recognize, the superhero genre has taken over the name of comic book movie adaptations. However, there are a handful of comics-based movies and shows that don’t stem from Marvel or DC. The industry has frequently turned to published writing for inspiration, whether from books, the social reading platform Wattpad, its sister-site Webtoon, created specifically for graphic novels, or other printed comic books....

Netflix subscribers are going to be seeing a lot more of Ricky Gervais in the coming years. The streaming service has signed Gervais to a multiyear, overall deal that will include After Life season 3. The second season of the dark comedy debuted last month and proved to be rather successful, which led to Netflix and Gervais extending the scope of their partnership. There is no word yet on how soon After Life season 3 could get underway....

You can bring home three action-packed Universal titles home in high definition this July. Alpha Dog, Assault on Precinct 13 and In Bruges will all make their Blu-ray debuts on July 13. Series co-creator Ryan Murphy and the cast of American Horror Story attended PaleyFest 2013 on Friday night, where American Horror Story: Coven was revealed as the title of Season 3. Ryan Murphy also confirmed that parts of the show will take place in New Orleans. While we’ve known for a few weeks that these new episodes will revolve around Witches, and could possibly delve into the Salem Witch Trials, the latest chapter in this horror anthology series will stay true to its roots, and much like American Horror Story: Asylum, it will be playing with a lot of different horror genre ideas and tropes....

While TNT knows drama, one of their shows is getting a comedic actress for a guest-starring role. TNT announced that Amy Sedaris (Strangers with Candy) will guest star in two episodes of The Closer. Sedaris will be portraying Fritz’s (Jon Tenney) sister, Claire, a vegan who also thinks she possesses psychic abilities. Sedaris will begin her two-episode arc with the episode, Fate Line, which will air on Monday, February 16 at 9 PM ET....

The Academy Awards are always known for throw some curveballs, but the announcement of this years’ nominations went mostly to script. Among the nominations revealed for the 2023 Oscars ceremony is Angela Bassett, who becomes the first actress to ever be nominated for Marvel Studios movie for her role in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Having already walked away with the Golden Globe award, many are expecting Bassett to take the Best Supporting Actress Oscar and make history for the Marvel franchise....

Lionsgate, a leading global entertainment company, and Roadside Attractions have together acquired U.S. distribution rights to Nicholas Jarecki’s Arbitrage. The announcement was made jointly by Steve Beeks, President and Co-COO of Lionsgate, and by Roadside Attractions’ Co-Presidents Howard Cohen and Eric d’Arbeloff. The acquisition was made following the well-received world premiere of the film at the Sundance International Film Festival. Bill Hader has been a beloved comedic actor for years, dating back to his days on Saturday Night Live, but this series proved to be something of a turn for him, as it showcased a new side that audiences had yet to experience.
