The Writers Guild of America, West (WGAW) and the Writers Guild of America, East (WGAE) announced nominations for outstanding achievement in writing for the screen in both film and television for 2011. Winners will be honored at the 2012 Writers Guild Awards on Sunday, February 19, 2012, during simultaneous ceremonies in Hollywood and New York. Categories for film include Best Original Screenplay, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Documentary Screenplay. The TV nominations are a little more extensive, offering awards for Best Drama Series, Best Comedy Series, Best New Series, Best Episodic Drama, Best Animated Series, Best Comedy/Variety Series, and Best Daytime Drama....

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has now been granted the rights to properties that were held just out of reach for decades, taunting the billion-dollar Marvel Studios from being able to evolve their cinematic layout without falling into the legal snares of licensing trouble. 20th Century Fox was adamant about holding onto their reproduction rights of the X-Men since the FOX-Men Era emerged in the dawn of the 2000s, spanning nearly two decades while cleverly stepping out of Marvel Studios’ way....

ABC Family has greenlighted two half-hour pilots: 10 Things I Hate About You, based on the film, and Ruby and the Rockits, starring Alexa Vega. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the studio has also greenlighted an original movie with Joey Lawrence and Melissa Joan Hart. Gil Junger, who directed the 10 Things I Hate About You feature, is on board to direct the single-camera pilot as well as the untitled movie....

Abbott Elementary has truly taken ABC by storm, being the network’s first comedy premiere to quadruple ratings since its original airing, according to Deadline. The show aired back in December, earning a 0.6 rating in the 18-49 demo with 2.79 million viewers. However, after 35 days of viewing across ABC’s linear and digital platforms, the series premiere shot up 300% in the demo for a 2.4 rating and a total of 7....

All Democratic and Republican presidential candidates have confirmed their attendance at the two ABC News and ABC5/WOI-TV live debates in August 2007. The 90-minute forums, moderated by ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos and with additional questioning from David Yepsen of The Des Moines Register, will be held at Drake University. Miranda Harcourt has received the honor of being named a Dame Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for her contributions to the screen industry and theatre. Even though famed horror auteur Dario Argento is set to release his latest thriller Giallo on DVD this week, star Adrien Brody is suing for the sum of $3 million in an attempt to stop the movie from seeing distribution. The actor alleges that producers lied to him in order to keep him from walking off the set. The Hollywood Reporter states that Adrien Brody signed a “pay or play” contract to appear in the project, but soon discovered that Giallo was under funded, and that producers had failed to pay upwards of $640,000 into an escrow account....

You can bring a quirky romantic tale home on DVD and Blu-ray right before Christmas. All About Steve will be released on DVD and Blu-ray on December 22. Anthony Hopkins and Judi Dench are in talks to star in Italian Shoes for Left Bank Films and director Kenneth Branagh. Richard Cottan is writing the script, which is adapted from Henning Mankell’s novel. The plot centers on a retired surgeon, who has become a recluse on a private island in Sweden. The doctor must confront the mistakes of his past, when he is reunited with a former lover. Production will start at the end of 2012 or early 2013, depending on when both actors are available....

With the long-awaited Avatar: The Way of Water now finally showing in theaters everywhere after 13 years in James Cameron’s tedious 3D production process, it may come as a surprise to many that the next sequel in the franchise is not nearly as far away. Batgirl’s Leslie Grace is making her way to the podcast universe. The star of the now-canceled film will star in and produce How to Win Friends and Disappear People, a comedy-thriller podcast, Deadline reports. More bad news has come in for Bill Cosby. After a criminal trial for sex crimes that resulted in a guilty verdict and a prison sentence of 3-10 years, Cosby was freed last year after serving just under three years behind bars. His conviction was overturned when the Pennsylvania Supreme Court ruled that the Ghost Dad star’s due process rights were violated. It resulted in Cosby going free, even if the release didn’t do much for repairing his reputation....

WEEKEND BOX OFFICE As predicted, director Christopher Nolan’s Inception defeated Angelina Jolie’s Salt last weekend to take the number one spot at the box office for a second week in a row.
