Documentaries and narrative features are often very distinct from each other. A documentary is supposed to tell a real story, and a narrative feature is supposed to tell a fictional one. But it’s not really so simple. Many narrative features are based on true stories, and others even use the documentary style to portray a fictional plot. Movies like District 9 or The Blair Witch Project are examples of this. On the other hand, just because a movie is a documentary, this doesn’t mean it can’t be compelling, experimental, and entertaining....

It was announced today that Emmett/Furla Films and Cheetah Vision Films are partnering to produce the action thriller The Pursuit, which will star Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson. The announcement was made today by Randall Emmett, who co-runs Cheetah Vision with Jackson and is partnered with George Furla in Emmett/Furla Films. Director Jessy Terrero (Soul Plane, Gun) has signed a three picture directing deal with the producers, which will begin with him directing The Pursuit....

Alex Trebek had a pretty good idea of whom he wanted to succeed him as the host of Jeopardy!, but that option was not treated seriously by the show’s producers. Attorney and CNN legal analyst Laura Coates, who hosts The Laura Coates Show on SiriusXM, caught the attention of Trebek before the longtime Jeopardy! host’s passing in 2020. In 2018, Trebek had personally named Coates as one of his picks for who could be the next host of the show after he was gone....

The Dimension Films dark comedy Bad Santa is finally close to getting a sequel. Billy Bob Thornton recently caught up with The Playlist revealing some good news for Bad Santa 2. Earlier last year Johnny Rosenthal and John Phillips were writing separate scripts for the sequel. The original follows two conmen who go on a road trip to malls dressed as Santa and his elf. Rather than spreading good cheer, the duo’s motive is to rob each establishment, a strategy that becomes complicated when they encounter an 8-year-old who teaches them the true meaning of Christmas....

HBO has released the new trailer for Ballers Season 3, which teases right away that business is certainly picking up for Dwayne Johnson’s Spencer Strasmore. The trailer opens with his secretary saying that the NBA’s reigning MVP, Steph Curry, is on Line 1, and we see the NBA star at least makes a cameo this season. Throughout the first two seasons, the show has followed Spencer, who has reinvented himself as a financial manager for current players in sunsoaked Miami....

According to IGN, Battle Royale producer Roy Lee has had to put a leash on his Americanized remake of the gory Japanese thriller. In an interview, he claimed that the recent Virginia Tech massacre has had a heavy impact on the future of the film. New Line Cinema had been pursuing rights to the property, which focuses on a ninth grade class imprisoned on an island and forced to kill one another....
