The first quarter of 2007 definitely goes to Blu-ray. In a story from The Hollywood Reporter, it seems that “of the high-definition discs bought by consumers in the first quarter, 70% were in the Blu-ray Disc format and 30% were HD-DVD.” The numbers were “provided by Home Media Magazine’s market research department.” February saw Blu-ray take the lead over it’s rival format “and its percentage of total sales accelerated to the point where it accounted for nearly three out of every four high-definition discs sold in March....

The official trailer for the new slasher horror film, Candy Land, is a precursor to the movie’s official release tomorrow. The John Swab-directed film promises all the elements of a horror slasher mixed with a religious cult documentary. There are crucifixes, prairie dresses, a location in the middle of nowhere, a notoriously dangerous profession, a sheriff played by William Baldwin claiming he can’t get involved, darkness, a hissing priest, blood, knives, guns, dentures, and more blood....

Animated films are a popular genre amongst both children and adults, introducing themes that anyone can relate to. Cohesive storylines, dynamic plot, and comedic characters all compose what makes an animated film so great. The first animated film was created in 1908 by a French cartoonist and it is called Fantasmagorie. Like many of these early animations, the pictures were hand drawn and created frame-by frame. In 1928, nearly two decades after Fantasmagorie, Walt Disney introduced the world to what would become one of the most iconic cartoon characters ever created: Mickey Mouse, the character that would become famous for the animated short, Steamboat Willie, and become one of the first sound cartoons ever made....

”The Eyes of Don Bachardy” and “In the Realms of the Unreal,” which each focus on individual artists, will be screened for the February 22 installment of the Contemporary Documentary Series, presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the Academy Foundation and the UCLA Film and Television Archive. Free and open to the public, the screening begins at 7:30 p.m. in the James Bridges Theater on the UCLA campus....

We have a brand new trailer for Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., which just recently debuted at San Diego Comic-Con. Historically speaking, the show hasn’t been airing during SDCC, which means the event served as a preview of what was coming our way during the next season of the Marvel series. Beloved actor John Ritter is gone, but not forgotten. On Sept. 17, Ritter would have turned 74 years old if he were still with us today. The Avenue has released the official red band trailer for Medieval. Rated R for “strong and grisly violent content throughout” along with some nudity, the movie earns its rating as seen in the new trailer. The film will hit theaters on Sept. 9, and ahead of the premiere, you can get a sneak peek by watching the new trailer on YouTube.
