Look out Apple TV. Some competition is coming your way. According to The Hollywood Reporter, video rental chain Blockbuster is currently developing a set-top box similar to the Apple TV, which allows users to rent streaming movies right from their remote-controlled unit. They are expected to announce the offering later this month and, while Blockbuster declined comment, a spokesperson offered this: “We’re talking to numerous companies and vendors about products, services, alliances and initiatives that can help us achieve our mission to transform Blockbuster into a company that provides access to media content across multiple channels – from our stores, by mail, through kiosks, through downloading, through portable content-enabled devices– so it’s not surprising that there are rumors out there....

Darren Aronofsky’s The Whale may be one of the year’s most anticipated films, but there are those who aren’t quite as thrilled about its release. Directed by Aronofsky, the film follows Brendan Fraser as a 600-pound gay man hoping to reconnect with his daughter (Sadie Sink) years after abandoning his family. For Fraser to effectively play the role, use of a “fatsuit” was required, something that Fraser has said gives him a greater understanding of what daily life is like for people with that body type....

Back in October, it was revealed that James Wan is set to executive produce a MacGyver remake for CBS. The filmmaker was originally slated to direct the pilot episode, but he was forced to back out due to scheduling conflicts with The Conjuring 2. While CBS did issue a series order for the remake last month, they are actually scrapping this pilot and reshooting it with James Wan at the helm, and a new concept....

Shonka Dukureh, the actress who played Big Mama Thornton in Baz Luhrmann’s recent Elvis biopic, has died at 44. Dukureh was found dead in the bedroom of her Nashville apartment Thursday. The Metro Nashville Police Department shared the news in a tweet, writing: Police told Fox 17 Nashville that one of her children found her unresponsive Thursday morning and ran to a neighbor’s apartment, where the neighbor proceeded to call 911....

Over the past few years, it’s become a tradition for Super Bowl ads to be released a few days before the big game itself. That trend has continued this year for Super Bowl 50, with a slew of advertisers debuting their ads early, including new trailers for Gods of Egypt and Eddie the Eagle already debuting online. Not all comic book characters are treated equally. Some characters get multiple comic series, TV shows, and movies made about their exploits. Some are lucky to show up in a modern comic book at all as a ‘joke’ character. This isn’t necessarily fair, as Grant Morrison proved with Animal Man when he took a relatively obscure character and fleshed him out. Villains like Calendar Man or Clock King can similarly become very scary in the hands of the right writer, and thereby make for great on-screen entertainment....

The horror genre is not normally associated with family entertainment. Since its inception in the early days of cinema, horror movies have been giving nightmares to people across the globe. Nowadays, jump scares, taboo-breaking themes, and blood and gore are just some tropes commonly associated with the genre. Not exactly the makings for ideal Saturday afternoon-viewing with the family. ABC is developing three murder-themed projects, while the CW is close to enlisting Grey’s Anatomy executive producer Mark Gordon for a drama dubbed Reaper, according to Variety. At ABC, the Brett Ratner entry Women’s Murder Club (based on the James Patterson book), the Frank Spotnitz drama Murder Incorporated and the John Scott Shepherd-written Killing Sam Carter are all in the works. Women’s Murder Club follows four femmes who track down serial killers in San Francisco....

Academy Award Nominee Gena Rowlands will guest star as Erika Hellman, a Holocaust survivor who is questioned by the FBI after a painting worth millions of dollars that once belonged to her family is stolen from a museum just before it is to go on tour, on NUMB3RS, Friday, Oct. 6 (10:00-11:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network. Bethesda Softworks announced today that all five actors who portrayed the Star Trek series captains – William Shatner, Patrick Stewart, Scott Bakula, Avery Brooks, and Kate Mulgrew – will provide voiceovers in the Star Trek: Legacy video game. The collaboration marks the first time the five actors have participated on a single Star Trek project together. “I am delighted to have the chance to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Star Trek with my fellow captains by providing our voices to Star Trek: Legacy,” said Shatner....

An 80s music icon has been cast in the Prime Video series The Horror of Dolores Roach. Per Variety, Cyndi Lauper has just boarded the series as the character Ruthie, a Broadway theater usher who “moonlights as a private investigator and stirs up trouble for Dolores Roach.” She joins previously announced cast members Justina Muchado, Alejandro Hernandez, Kita Updike, K. Todd Freeman, Marc Maron, Jean Yoon, Judy Reyes, and Jeffery Self....

Gary Marsh, president and chief creative officer of Disney Channels Worldwide, has announced that Andi Mack Season 3 is officially green lit. Along with the official announcement from the Disney Channel, cast members Peyton Elizabeth Lee, Lilan Bowden, Joshua Rush, Sofia Wylie, and Asher Angel revealed the news on ABC’s Good Morning America today, which is smart since it’s a holiday and all of their target audience is home from school....

Fans of 1990s pop music might see this news as devastating, but the hit song “Barbie Girl” by Aqua will reportedly not be featured in the live-action Barbie movie. In development from director Greta Gerwig, Barbie stars Margot Robbie as the human version of the popular plastic doll of the same name. A first look at the film was just recently unveiled at CinemaCon revealing Robbie in character as Barbie, complete with the pink convertible and all....
