Barack Obama was elected the nation’s first black president Tuesday night in a historic triumph that overcame racial barriers as old as America itself. The 47-year-old Democratic senator from Illinois sealed his victory by defeating Republican Sen. John McCain in a string of wins in hard-fought battleground states - Ohio, Florida, Virginia and Iowa. A huge crowd thronged Grant Park in Chicago to cheer Obama’s improbable triumph and await his first public speech as president-elect....

It looks like Hollywood has been knocking on the door of Harry Markopolos, the whistleblower who exposed Bernie Madoff, the man who ran the the world’s largest financial fraud scam of all time. Markopolos’ book “No One Would Listen: A True Financial Thriller” chronicles the story, and hits stores today. Markopolos said that Hollywood is very interested in turning the movie into a feature film, “All the major studios. Sony, Paramount, Tom Hanks, you name it” have contacted him about the rights to his story....

You can bring home an outrageous blaxploitation film home on DVD and Blu-ray next February. Black Dynamite will be released on DVD and Blu-ray on February 2, 2010. It’s no secret that the Thousand-Year Blood War arc of Tite Kubo’s manga series Bleach suffered from some behind-the-scenes conflicts. What exactly these conflicts were are irrelevant here. The end result is the same regardless; the manga’s ending was rushed, forcing Kubo to cut many parts of the story that fans were looking forward to. These include reducing the roles and contributions of many characters. WEEKEND BOX OFFICE Over the Thanksgiving Day holiday last week, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1 managed to just barely hold on to the spot with some stiff competition from Disney’s new animated film, Tangled. With no new major releases this week, the “Rapunzel” movie was able to take down the young wizard and finally earn the top spot with $21.5 million. Moving up one space from its debut last week to number one is Tangled, the 50th animated feature film from Walt Disney Pictures, based on the classic “Rapunzel” fairy tale....

Following the addition of Michael McKean last month, AMC’s Breaking Bad spin-off Better Call Saul has added Patrick Fabian, Rhea Seehorn and Michael Mando to the cast. While their characters have not been confirmed, Deadline reports that they are all playing characters who were listed in a casting breakdown released last month. Patrick Fabian is playing Burt, a “Kennedy” type lawyer from a prestigious firm, Rhea Seehorn is portraying another attorney named Beth, and Michael Mando is playing Eddie, a Spanish-speaking career criminal....

AMC made a slew of announcements at its upfront presentation today, including the news that the second half of Breaking Bad will return with “The Decision” on Sunday, August 11 at 9 PM ET. The network also revealed that they have greenlight the talk show Talking Bad, a live show that will air after every new episode of Breaking Bad. Home Media Retailing reports that Steven Soderbergh’s Bubble brought in $5 million over the weekend. This total includes what the film made theatrically, “DVD preorders and other revenues.” The film went out on 32 screens and made $72,000, but so far orders for the film on DVD “are quadruple expectations.” These totals are all from Magnolia Pictures which produced and released the movie. Mark Cuban, who co-owns HDNet cable, it’s production house, Magnolia Pictures and the Landmark Theater chain, also released the film via HDNet cable this past weekend....

Actresses Saoirse Ronan and Gemma Arterton have been set to star in the vampire drama Byzantium. The story centers around a vampire mother who turns her only daughter into a vampire as well. They sometimes pose as sisters to lure in their victims. Saoirse Ronan and Gemma Arterton will play this deadly duo on screen. Neil Jordan will direct Byzantium from an original screenplay by Moira Buffini, who recently wrote the Gemma Arterton drama Tamara Drewe....

Catherine Zeta-Jones is reuniting with director Steven Soderbergh, joining the cast of his psychopharmacology drama Side Effects for Open Road Films. We reported earlier this month that actors Blake Lively, Jude Law, and Channing Tatum have also signed on. The story centers on Blake Lively’s character, a woman who gets addicted to prescription drugs out of fear that her husband (Channing Tatum) will be released from prison soon.
