Last week, a report surfaced that teased some of the movies that may be promoted during Super Bowl 50, which airs today on CBS. The report claimed that Disney would be promoting several of its movies, and while no specific ads were confirmed, it was rumored that we could get our first look at Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, the new Star Wars spinoff which is currently in post-production and set for release on December 16. Thankfully, this rumor turned out to be true, and you can see the trailer that aired during the Super Bowl below.
Rogue One is set between Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope, centering on a group of Rebels who hatch a mission to steal the original Death Star plans. There have been rumors that the iconic villain Darth Vader will have a big role in this story, and there is also speculation that this spinoff will introduce the young Han Solo, before he stars in the second spinoff, Star Wars Anthology: Han Solo.

Felicity Jones, Mads Mikkelsen, Ben Mendelsohn (who is reportedly playing the villain), Alan Tudyk, Diego Luna, Forest Whitaker, Donnie Yen, Riz Ahmed, Jonathan Aris and Wen Jiang lead the cast, although little is known about their characters. A rumor recently surfaced that Felicity Jones is playing a Rebel pilot named Lyra Erso, but that has not been confirmed. Mads Mikkelsen’s character is rumored to be named Galen, but the studio hasn’t released any official details about these roles yet. Over the weekend, a new report surfaced that claims Scottish supermodel Eunice Olumide is playing a nomadic Rebel Leader.
What we do know for sure is that Gareth Edwards (Godzilla) is directing from a script by Chris Weitz (Cinderella) and Gary Whitta (After Earth). After Rogue One: A Star Wars Story hits theaters in December, Star Wars: Episode VIII will hit theaters on May 26, 2017, followed by Star Wars Anthology: Han Solo on May 25, 2018, Star Wars: Episode IX in 2019 and Star Wars Anthology: Boba Fett in 2020. Disney and LucasFilm haven’t confirmed any plans beyond those movies, but a report from November claimed that the studios plan on churning out one new Star Wars movie a year, indefinitely.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story will hit theaters on December 16, with its only direct competition being Warner Bros. Chicken Soup For the Soul. It remains to be seen if this spinoff can break the massive $247.9 million opening weekend record set last month by Star Wars: The Force Awakens. While we wait for more on Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, take a look at the Super Bowl 50 trailer below, and stay tuned for more details.
