Warner Bros. has just released the first trailer for Aquaman and it looks awesome. Fans of Aquaman weren’t sure if they’d ever see a live-action movie until the release of 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice when the world got to see, albeit briefly, Aquaman shoving his trident at a camera and then swimming away. Though it was announced that Aquaman would be included in the upcoming Justice League movie back in 2014, fans just needed to see it to believe it. And now the time is here to finally see the first trailer of the standalone Aquaman movie.
The very first trailer for Jason Momoa’s portrayal of Aquaman, which comes straight from Comic-Con begins with a look of Amnesty Bay with a voiceover from Momoa. A lot of fans weren’t happy with the way Aquaman was portrayed in the Justice League trailer, but director James Wan’s vison of the character is a completely different ballgame here, apples and oranges and the underwater scenery is beautiful. DC’s Geoff Johns recently talked about what makes Aquaman such an interesting character and he replied “because his father was a human, his mother was Atlantean, and he thinks he’s a half breed and he doesn’t belong in either world, the surface or the oceans or Atlantis. He kind of considers himself to be a man of no world.”

It was announced in August of 2014 that Warner Bros. had hired two screenwriters, Will Beall and Kurt Johnstad to write two completely different scripts for the upcoming Aquaman project. Warner Bros. would decide which script that they liked the best and production would start after that. It was later announced that Jason Momoa was cast to play the underwater hero and that directing duties would go to James Wan (Saw) with a script written by Kurt Johnstad. It was later reported that David Leslie would provide the script and that the movie was aiming for a 2018 release date.
Aquaman began filming on May 1st in Australia, with rumors of a Hawaiian shoot over the summer as well as some more filming planned for Italy in September. There has not been an official synopsis released at this time, but Wan and DC have stated before that the movie will not be an origin story and that it will take place after the events of Justice League, so spoiler alert: Aquaman won’t die in the upcoming Justice League movie. Wan has said that the movie will have some kind of romantic adventure to it like in the style of 1980’s Romancing the Stone, which could imply that Aquaman and Mera (Amber Heard) might not get along when they first meet, much like Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner in Romancing the Stone.
Warner Bros. had originally set up a summer of 2018 release, but the movie ended up getting pushed back twice to its final spot, which is December 21st, 2018. So, there we have it, the first real look at Jason Momoa as the almighty Aquaman and it looks a lot different than the style of the Justice League trailers. We’ll get our first real look at Aquaman on November 17th, 2017 when Justice League hits theaters, but until then you can check out the brand-new trailer below.
