Disney movies are known for their larger-than-life villains like Ursula, Maleficent, and Hades. These characters — and others — are extremely well-known and often the first to come to mind when thinking about animated movie villains; however, Disney isn’t the only production house that can turn out a top-tier villain.

Movies like Shrek, Coraline and even The Lego Movie have all created memorable villains that can stand up next to Disney’s extensive catalog and are just as good, sometimes even better. Because of how massive Disney is, it can be easy to forget that other animation studios exist, and — though they have a hand in seemingly everything — not everything that’s animated is by Disney. To recap some of the greatest, here are seven of the best villains from non-Disney animated movies.

8 Tai Lung - Kung Fu Panda (2008)

     Paramount Pictures

Tai Lung is the villain from the 2008 Kung Fu Panda movie about a Kung Fu-loving giant panda named Po (Jack Black), who becomes the acclaimed “Dragon Warrior.” The Dragon Warrior is the hero destined to defeat the vengeful snow leopard Tai Lung (Ian McShane) after he escaped from prison. Tai Lung is a fierce fighter, but full of pride and darkness, which ultimately leads to his downfall. While the real jewel of Kung Fu Panda is its bright characters like Po and the Furious Five, Tai Lung’s dark, brutal contrast makes him a great villain for the franchise’s first installment.

7 Rasputin - Anastatia (1997)

     20th Century Studios, FilmFlex

Often mistaken as a Disney movie, the 1997 animated movie Anastasia was actually distributed by 20th Century Studios, formerly known as 20th Century Fox. It’s about the last surviving child of the royal Russian family, the Romanovs, as she joins two unaware con men to reunite with her grandmother, all while dodging the evil Rasputin.

Voiced by Christopher Lloyd (Back to the Future), Rasputin is an undead evil-doer who sells his soul in exchange for the deaths of the Romanov family. He’s full of spite and zombie-like, making him a rather creepy, off-putting villain even for an animated movie. One of the best parts of Rasputin, though, is his sidekick Bartok (Hank Azaria), an albino bat that helps keep Rasputin on the ball and serves as the movie’s comic relief.

6 Hexxus - FernGully: The Last Rainforest (1992)

     2oth Century Studios

FernGully: The Last Rainforest is equal parts fun and poignant, as it’s really all about the devastation of pollution and the necessity of being more environmentally conscious. Released in 1992, FernGully is about an Australian rainforest full of fairies that rally together to protect their home against loggers and the demon-like Hexxus. Hexxus is the embodiment of pollution and is determined to destroy the rainforest and uses humans — unknowingly — to do his environment-destroying bidding. Hexxus not only entertains as a powerful, scary villain, but he also serves as an information vessel, providing a sort of call-to-action for those watching.

5 Lord Farquaad - Shrek (2001)

4

Lord Farquaad is the main antagonist from the first Shrek movie. Although Lord Farquaad is often the butt of everyone’s jokes, mainly about his short stature and the fact that his palace and displays of wealth make it look like he’s “compensating for something,” he’s still a cunning, evil bad guy.

Driven by status and power, he pushes the fairytale creatures out of their homes, takes over land in Far, Far, Away, and plans to force Princess Fiona to become his wife, until he discovers she turns into an ogre come nightfall. Farquaad is equal parts sinister and entertaining. He’s an iconic villain and really helped jumpstart the first installment in the Shrek franchise. Ultimately, though, justice is served when he’s gobbled up by a dragon at the end of the movie.

3 Lord Business - The LEGO Movie (2014)

     Warner Bros. Pictures/Universal Pictures

Lord Business is the tyrannical villain from 2014’s The LEGO Movie. The LEGO Movie is about Emmet (Chris Pratt), a Lego mini-figure who ends up leading a resistance against Lord Business (Will Ferrell), who wants to glue all the Lego pieces in the world together to create his ideal, perfect world, ultimately free of creativity and fun.

Lord Business is a control-obsessed business executive who personifies what happens when you’re all work and no play. Though he’s dead-set on eliminating any sense of creativity from the world, his revelation and change of heart toward the end of the movie make him a great, dynamic villain with a message.

2 The Fairy Godmother - Shrek 2 (2004)

Dreamworks Pictures, Universal Pictures, Paramount Pictures

The Fairy Godmother is another iconic villain from the Shrek franchise. Appearing in Shrek 2, Fairy Godmother is a cunning, evil version of the classic Fairy Godmother known from fairy tales like Cinderella. All she really cares about is marrying off her son Prince Charming to Fiona, and she doesn’t care who she has to manipulate, threaten, or cast a spell on in the process. While she’s certainly the antagonist of the movie, Fairy Godmother is a really fun character. From her dazzling dresses to her snarky one-liners and flashy musical performance, she makes Shrek 2 a great watch.

1 The Other Mother - Coraline (2009)

     Focus Features

Coraline’s Other Mother is downright scary. After crawling through a small door in her home that transports her to a parallel universe, Coraline discovers the Other Mother, a complete opposite of her real mom back home. The Other Mother is stylish and cool and, at first glance, seems like the better, preferred maternal figure. However, that’s not reality.

Donning dark button eyes, the Other Mother speaks with a warm, yet sinister tone, that manipulates Coraline and others into trusting her. But she later shows her true form, and transforms into a demonic, spider-like creature, dead-set on sewing buttons into Coraline’s eyes to keep her forever. For a kid’s horror movie, the Other Mother is truly creepy.
